Statistical Foundations for Business Forecasts

H. W. Gearing

The Metal Box Company Ltd., London, UK

Economic progress in the second half of the twentieth century depends upon the investment of large amounts of capital in new factories, in new processes and on the exploitation of the world's natural resources. The future success of many businesses will depend largely on the ability of their managements to make reasonably accurate forecasts. This article discusses some of the possible uses of the computers in the establishment and maintenance of records which will serve as foundations for business forecasting routines, and reviews some recently published details of work carried out at the U.S. Bureau of Census.
