The nature and structure of man-computer communication in team control systems

J. N. G. Brittan *

R.N. College, Greenwich, London, UK

It is no longer necessary to emphasize the importance of the man-machine interface in all computer systems, and particularly those working in real time. Most of the fundamental work in this field so far has dealt with systems such as computer-assisted design projects, where the computer is acting as an adviser and assistant to the man.

This paper deals with some of the problems met within real time control systems in which the computer is acting as an executive in its own right, albeit in a slightly junior capacity to the man. For the purposes of this paper these systems are defined as team control systems.
