A cost accounting formula for multiprogramming computers
Data Handling Division, CERN, Geneva, Switzerland
A cost accounting formula is derived for a multiprogramming computer consisting of a single level memory, and a number of channels. The cost of a job is defined as its relative importance when passing through the computer in terms of the demands it makes on the resources of the computer, taking into account the competition with other jobs for those same resources. The parameters of the accounting formula are discussed in detail, and the practical implementation of the formula is illustrated by reference to Control Data 6000 computers.
