The automatic solution of systems of ordinary differential equations by the method of Taylor series
Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK
A method is described for the automatic reduction of an arbitrary system of ordinary differential equations to a form suitable for solution by the method of Taylor series. The paper then describes how a program may be generated from the reduced form that will carry out the formal solution of the system by that method. Further it is shown that the reduction and the program generation may be performed by a program that is similar in may respects to a compiler that compiles programs written in a simple language. This language is defined in the paper. The method has been implemented and several examples are presented.
