A keyword index file of British book titles
Book Centre Limited, North Circular Road, Neasden, London, UK
This paper describes a data file which takes the form of an indexed catalogue of book titles. Each title appears in the file indexed under each keyword contained in the title and author. The file is used for on-line retrieval purposes and input to the system is plain language in the form of a requested book title.
A request for a book title is entered on a VDU keyboard and the file is searched using all input keywords in a matching process to locate the desired title. The search may be narrow or wide depending upon the number of keyword entered as input. If a specified title is required then all keywords are entered; if all titles in particular series of books are required then only the keywords of the series are entered.
The technique used for the construction of the file is similar to that used for the preparation of KWIC (Keyword in Context) printed indexes.
Similar problems of searching large catalogues arise before order entry in other businesses; the work of maintaining numerical catalogues can absorb considerable computer time, printing and distribution costs.
