Data communication user research in the Post Office: Part 1

Part 1 of this paper presents the more important aspects of ongoing Post Office research on data transmission users. A description is given of three studies, how they link together, their interface with other parts of the organisation, their background, objectives, and the methods of approach used.
Methodology conceived to overcome some of the difficulties specific to this field is considered in Part 2 where EDP applications are defined in an operational way so that they become amendable to quantitative treatment. Stochastic models are proposed for building up relationships between these and economic, as well as more specialised, user characteristics. Information requirements, concise terminology for data transmission equipment and other aspects are also included.
