Experience in using a Deuce Computer for the Family Expenditure Survey

P. Redfern

Central Statistics Office, London, UK

A talk, given to The British Computer Society in London on 4 May 1959, reviewed some of the lessons learnt in using a computer for a statistical survey. After a short description of the origin of the survey, and of its statistical aspects, an account was given of the computer experience under fiver headings:

The choice of computer
The computer input and output
The program and computer operation
Programming and programmers
Costs.

The text below has since been provided by the author. The experience was gained and the talk prepared, before a significant amount of work on British automatic coding systems had been published.
