Toward a performance science: a comparative analysis of computing systems
IBM United Kingdom Limited, DCS Support Centre, 42 The Centre, Feltham, Middlesex, UK
This paper sets out to illustrate that is systems are measured and data is analysed in an appropriate way, both pattern behaviour and strictly quantitative values can be generalised for those systems, even though they may be operating in different ways. These results may therefore be used for accurate planning and general system design, and, moreover, may form the nucleus of a performance science in which general principles of computing system behaviour are deduced from live systems and may be compared with theoretical models.
The relation of this approach to benchmarking is discussed in detail.
