A design language for asynchronous logic

A. K. Burston *, D. J. Kinniment * and H. Kahn *

Department of Computer Science, University of Manchester, Manchester, UK

This paper discusses the restrictions and problems of conventional design systems for digital hardware. From this is derived a set of requirements for an improved design system. Using these requirements, a discussion of existing design systems and the known requirements of designers of large systems, a set of criteria for a design system for large, fast, parallel, asynchronous hardware is produced. Most of the paper involves a description of the ADL design language, which is then viewed in terms of the original criteria. An example of the use of the ADL is included as an appendix.
