On an iterative approach to the numerical solution of difference schemes

J. R. Cash1 * and J. C. P. Miller2 § ¶

1 Dept. of Math., Imperial College, South Kensington, London, UK, 2 7 De Freville Avenue, Cambridge, UK

The design of iterative algorithms for the numerical solution of difference schemes is discussed. By carrying out an error analysis, simple conditions for the stability of these schemes are derived. Finally several practical applications of the algorithms discussed in this paper are examined.

Regular readers of The Computer Journal are aware of the major contribution which Dr J. C. P. Miller has made to computing theory and, more particularly, to the Journal. For some time Dr Miller has coped with illness and, although still active, is unlikely to be as prolific in the future. It is felt that now is the time to recognise that contribution by relaxing temporarily the policy covering the publication of papers in numerical mathematics and including in this issue what may well be ‘Jeff Miller's last paper in this subject’. In presenting the paper we send Dr Miller our best wishes and regards.
