The possible impact of minicomputers and microprocessors on mainframe computer manufacturers
Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, University College, Newport Road, Cardiff, UK
The computer industry has evolved along many different paths, largely related to specific applications areas. Particular attention is focused in this paper on the dominant area of data processing. Big inroads are being made into markets traditionally dominated by the mainframe manufacturers by computers designed for more general purpose use. The recent advent of cheap LSI components and cheap high capacity disc drives will spawn a whole new generation of suppliers. This paper attempts to present a broad view of the current situation and to project this into the near future. The conclusion is reached that the future of the bigger companies is nowhere near as rosy as the current stock market results would indicate.
