The BLEND experimental programme is studying and exploring various types of electronic journals. The study includes the development of prototype software as the need for new features becomes evident. Reading papers on-line poses particular problems because of the limitation of the amount of material available to view on a typical cathode ray tube, which hinders the use of normal cues such as layout and easily distinguishable headings. Refereeing papers on-line poses problems in that it is difficult to make comments and marks on the script itself in the margins next to the relevant piece of text. Browsing through references and abstracts holds the same problem of lack of visual cues.
Experimental utility software to handle some of these problems has been developed. It is being used in the BLEND software for the reading and refereeing of papers and the Reference, Abstracts and Annotations Journal in which readers may have annotations appended to the authors abstracts.
