Centrenet is a high performance local area network designed to satisfy the requirements of both closely knit multi-computer systems and communities of users spread across large campus area. It uses high speed parallel switching nodes arranged in a tree-structured hierarchy with connections between nodes being implemented in optical fibre. Within each node is a Network Intelligence Module which assists in the setting up of a virtual calls across the network and in maintaining network integrity. A pilot system has been implemented and further work is in progress to extend both the network and its capabilities.
