Some Practical Principles For Design of Maintainable Systems
Department of Computation, U.M.I.S.T., P.O. Box 88, Manchester M60 1QD, UK
This paper describes six principles for designing data and programs, which ease maintenance. They are culled from programming folklore and do not form part of a theory, but are none the less important. The five applying to data can be followed easily. The one for programs calls for discipline on the part of the programmer, but is particularly valuable. They may form suitable for assessment by programming metrics.
