The Implications of SGML for the Preparation of Scientific Publications

J. M. Smith *

National Computing Centre, Oxford Road, Manchester, M1 7ED, UK

The Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) is a draft international standard for publishing. It is based on the generic markup of the structural elements of a document without regard to their presentation, which is regarded as a separate issue. The addition of many features and facilities combine to make SGML a powerful tool for full-text database publishing, where this includes computer-assisted publishing and electronic publishing.
