Solution of Simultaneous Linear Equations using a Magnetic-Tape Store

D. W. Barron and H. P. F. Swinnerton-Dyer

University Mathematical Laboratory, Cambridge, UK

This paper discusses the special problems involved in solving a set of simultaneous linear equations when magnetic tape is being used for auxiliary storage. An account is given of a sub-routine written to carry out this process on EDSAC 2. A description of EDSAC 2 and its auxiliary magnetic-tape equipment is given as an Appendix.
