Considerations in Choosing a Character Code for Computers and Punched Tapes

H. McG. Ross

Ferranti Ltd., 21 Portland place, London UK

The considerations affecting the choice of a code for alpha-numeric characters are discussed, the primary aim being to assist processing of commercial data in a computer system. A basic 6-bit code is obtained from which 7- and 8-track punched-tape codes are derived; minor variants of these may be realized on existing data-preparing and printing equipments. The scheme permits future development in a variety of directions, including a compatible code for extended alphabets.
