A Data Dictionary Approach to Teaching Information Systems Analysis
Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computing, Polytechnic of North London, Holloway Road, London N7 8DB, UK
The problems of teaching information systems analysis in an academic environment are well known. Students need to grapple with real-life situations in order to understand fully the theories, and acquire the skills. But often real-life situations are too large and complex to be handled within the confines of a single course unit on systems analysis. Restricting the real-life application, concentrating on a single methodology, and using a data dictionary approach may provide a solution. The aims of such an approach are three-fold: (i) to provide an understanding of the data dictionary concept; (ii) to emphases the importance of a well-ordered approach to systems analysis; (iii) to show how data dictionary tools may be used to aid and clarify the systems analysis process.
