Calculating Earthwords Volumes – An Exercise in Geometric Algorithms

A. Oxley *

Techsonix (UK) Ltd., Unit 2, Enterprise Way, Aston Science Park, Aston, Birmingham, B7 4BH, UK

In building construction works, the cost of transforming existing ground to proposed ground is often significant. Earth is removed from some locations and inserted into other. The problem is that of calculating the Cut and Fill volumes.

Land is surveyed by taking the height of ground at several places over a site. From this data a contour map may be interpolated. The person calculating Cut and Fill may not have access to the raw data and in this case must base his calculations on contours.
