Multimedia Information Systems – The Management and Semantic Retrieval of all Electronic Data Types

A Multimedia Information System is a repository for all types of information object. In the computing context, this means all types of digitally representable data such as text, images and voice. Such systems are complex and multi-disciplinary in nature.

This article presents requirements for a uniform solution, outlines those prototypes that attempt to solve the problem and introduces a new system under development at Manchester University.
