A methodology for information system planning and selection among alternative solutions for computerization of an organization is presented. The methodology is composed of the following stages:

  1. Definition of the organizational processes and objectives.
  2. Definition of the computer-related goals set for each organizational objective.
  3. Definition of the alternative information system processes required for each of the computer-related goals.
  4. Identification of alternative systems to satisfy those information system processes and selection of the preferred system.
  5. Preparation of a request for proposal.
  6. Selection of the preferred alternative.

The article describes in detail the first five steps of the methodology, along with an illustrative example.
