The design of multiple-access computer systems
University Mathematical Laboratory, Corn Exchange St., Cambridge, UK
This paper contains a discussion of some of the problems encountered in the design of a large-scale multiple-access computer system. It is written largely from the point of view of the software programmer, but essential hardware requirements receive attention. Some sections of the paper, notably those on the security accorded to confidential information and the protection of the system against unauthorized users, will be of interest to a wider class of readers. There is a section on the new problems involved in the management of a multiple-access computing centre, and attention is drawn to the need for developing the rudiments of a science of computer centre management.
