This paper describes a set of subprograms, to be called from a FORTRAN program, that will carry out various operations on variable length strings. A justification for such a facility together with a brief description of similar facilities implemented or proposed in FORTRAN is given. Some conclusions drawn after implementation and use of the system on various machines are briefly given. The desirability of adding variable length strings to the ANS FORTRAN standard is discussed.
