The conditional distribution of waiting time given queue length in a computer system

J. C. Turner *

Department of Mathematics, University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida, USA

In this paper, a model for the conditional distribution of waiting time given queue length is developed for a queue type computer system. The distribution is specified by its percentiles. Consideration of data from a real computer system leads to the model

[equation: see PDF]

where tp is the p-the percentile of waiting time; b is queue length and ap, b0 and cp are parameters. The parameters are estimated and their interpretation is discussed.

A second model is developed by considering the distribution of waiting time given queue length to be given by a location and scale change of a ‘standard’ distribution. The estimation of the parameters leads to the fitting of a table by a mixed additive and multiplicative model.
