Increasing computer system productivity software and hardware methods: A comparative study

The CPU utilisation of multiprogrammed computer systems is considered. Two methods to increase the CPU utilisation are studied and the effect of these two methods on other system parameters, such as the degree of multiprogramming and the elapsed time and throughput are investigated. The first method is via software techniques by altering existing software organisation of the system while the second is by altering the hardware configuration and in particular its I/O channels. Results are presented via a simulation model which indicate when, how much and under what conditions the system could benefit most.
