The B-spline curve and surface form has been used extensively in recent years for computer-based free-form surface design. However, greatest emphasis has been placed on modelling using B-splines, rather than on modification. This paper describes the result of work into automatic smoothing algorithms on B-splines. Two approaches are developed for unconstrained smoothing, and then adapted for smoothing while constrained by area. The results of these two algorithms are presented and discussed.
