Modern interactive computer systems make use of sophisticated interaction mechanisms that are not directly available in current programming languages. Lack of an easy and flexible means of implementing these mechanisms has been a major factor in the high cost of developing such systems. This paper promotes one attractive way of equipping programmers with these facilities. A package is described which offers flexible features for the control and management of normal character displays, and is based on the concept of overlapping windows.
